Don’t let things get boring. As an alternative to sandwiches try bagels, pitta bread, wraps or rolls

Calcium in cheese and milk is important for healthy bone and tooth development

Where possible choose lean meats (including chicken or turkey) and fish as they are lower in fat

 Recipe:  Chicken, pesto & cheese bagel

Chicken pesto

 INGREDIENTS 

•    1 plain bagel
•    1 teaspoon of pesto*
•    1 handful of grated cheese
•    3 cherry tomatoes*
•    1 handful of cooked chicken *

*Mix and match the other ingredients from the list of  scrummy swaps 

 METHOD 

1.    Slice the bagel in half 
2.    Put the bagel in the toaster and toast until light golden
3.    Spread a teaspoon of pesto onto each half on the bagel 
4.    Thinly slice the cooked chicken and tomatoes
5.     Layer the chicken, tomatoes and then the cheese on one half of the bagel
6.    Place the layered half of the bagel under the grill on a high heat for 3 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly 
7.    Remove the bagel from the grill and place the other half of the bagel on top to make a sandwich
8.    Cut the finished bagel in half or quarters to make eating easier
9.    Wrap in cling film, a sandwich bag or foil, or place in an airtight container to go in the lunchbox
